Tools

Getting into custom mechanical keyboards is like stepping into a world of infinite possibilities. Here you can create a keyboard that's perfectly customised to your needs and preferences, from keycaps to aesthetics. But to realise your vision, you need the right tools. Tools for custom keyboards are as important as the ingredients in a recipe. They help you assemble, modify and maintain your keyboard, giving you full control over the end result. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or a newbie just discovering this fascinating hobby, there's a wide range of tools that can simplify the process and take your keyboard to the next level.

Assembly and disassembly:

Keycap puller: This is an indispensable tool for removing and replacing keycaps (the keys) without damaging them or the switches underneath. There are different types of keycap pullers, including wire pullers and plastic pullers, to suit different preferences.
Switch puller: To replace or smash switches, you need a switch puller. It grips the switch and allows you to easily remove it from the PCB (Printed Circuit Board).
Screwdrivers: Different types of screwdrivers, such as Phillips and flathead, are used to assemble and disassemble the keyboard chassis and other components. Make sure to have the right size to avoid damaging the screws.
Tweezers/ tweezers: A pair of fine tweezers is useful for handling small parts, such as stabilisers and diodes, during the assembly process.

Modification and customisation:

Switch opener: To modify the circuitry of your switches, such as narrowing or changing springs, you need a switch opener. It helps you to open the switch in a safe way without damaging the core components.
Lubricant: Lubricating the switches is a popular way to get the key chain. There are different types of lubricants, such as Krytox and Super Lube, which provide different levels of smoothness and sound dampening.
Stabiliser modding tools: Stabilisers are used on larger keys, such as spacebar and shift, to provide a smooth and stable key response. Stabiliser modding tools, such as wire cutters and lube stations, help you to adjust and tighten the stabilisers for optimum performance.
Soldering iron/lödfloor: If you want to build a keyboard from scratch or modify the PCB, you will need a soldering iron/lödfloor and soldering pin. However, this requires more advanced skills and care.

Maintenance and cleaning:

Brush: A soft brush is perfect for removing dust and dirt from the keyboard, both on the surface and between the keys.
Compressed air: Compressed air in a can is an effective way to blow dust and dirt away from hard-to-reach areas.
Cleaning gel: Cleaning gel is a sticky material that you can press down between the keys to remove dust and dirt.
